Tom Hutton, route aficionado for Mountain Bike Rider magazine for 13 years, has now turned his hand to publishing guides to Britain’s best trails. First up is his take on the best the Lake District has to offer and if anyone should know, it’s Tom Hutton.

The book is a handy pocket size and sturdy enough to take a battering in the pocket of your rucksac. The introduction includes a useful ‘Routes at a glance’ section to whet your appetite and masses of useful information that is a first-rate primer for those new to big mountain biking and a great refresher for those of us who are a bit longer in the tooth.

The meat of the book, obviously, is the route description. Hutton has kept the inevitable icons to an absolute minimum and to my delight annotated the maps directly with self-explanatory comments. The maps are clear and any potential navigational pitfalls are well signposted. Hutton flags up potential technicalities without spoiling the surprise, fleshes out the description with those little details that bring the landscape to life and completes each section with a useful ‘Need to Know’ section detailing the all-important refuelling stops, links to other routes and whether it is conditions dependent.

The routes covered run the gamut from quick blast to epic and include some that verge on the esoteric for those who feel they’ve checked out everything the Lake District has to offer. This is an excellent concise guide.
